Thanks for the reply, Hans. Nope that didn't do it. I recompiled the 0.4.0 source for the current kernel (make clean; make), renamed the 0.4.1 msp3400.ko, copied in the 0.4.0 msp3400.ko and rebooted. Still no sound from recorded programs or from live TV.
In alsamixer, I've got Master and PCM unmuted and at 75%. I have CD (where the sound cable is plugged in) muted, at 75% and set as the capture source. This *was* working before I performed the upgrade. Do you have any other suggestions?
