Have you tried playing the MPEG recorded within Myth back with another 
app like
xine and mplayer?

I had similar issues with funny sounding audio, it turned out to be my 
Myth ALSA
setup.  I had to tweak my ALSA settings to get things to work properly. 
(Suggestion, get an emu10k-based board if you're using onboard sound. 
emu10k-based boards like the SB Live! and Audigy Just Plain Work.)
