I'm certainly no expert, but one thought comes to my mind based on my
experience (PVR250 on Debian running 2.6.16-1-686):

Do you have one (or more) directories under /lib/modules, representing
the particular kernel version you're running?  If so, have you tried
putting a copy (or a link) of the firmware under that directory (e.g.
/lib/modules/2.6.16-1-686/<here>?
