.exe using a utility and in another downloading a package of firmware files.
Which is the preferred method?

The package of firmware files is a recent addition I believe, to help alleviate the confusion of fast moving firmware files from Hauppauge. Which ever method works should be fine. Or, you can move the files there manually. They just won't be under package control (dpkg/apt/aptitude/apt-show-versions).

What exact steps do you go through to build the ivtv debian modules, and what kind of errors do you get? This could be good info for the list, if you are willing to work through it.

I would prefer to run stable, but my understanding from the MythTV howto for
Debian is that I have to run unstable. Is this true or not?

I don't think it's true. Especially if you use Christian Marillat's repository:
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ sarge main
deb-src ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ sarge main

One caveat tho. If you are using just ivtv interfacing cards, you should be good. However, if you are using DVB based cards which are using the v4l kernel based drivers (Air2PC, pcHDTV, etc), then you will need to rebuild the mythtv .debs with your kernel headers to get them to recognize the DVB FrontEnds.
