firmware_helper is part of the udev scripts, not ivtv. You might want to
update your udev package. I installed firmware-helper from udev-092 on
my system and it works fine.
i do a yum update udev but it says i have the latest one...

Are you sure the file v4l-cx25840.fw is in /lib/firmware?
yes...

Even though firmware_helper complains the driver still loads
v4l-cx2341x-enc.fw. What is the file size?

Note: the encoder firmware is old. Use the fw from here:
http://dl.ivtvdriver.org/ivtv/firmware/firmware.tar.gz
There really is something weird about your udev & firmware setup.
