I can certainly understand your hesitation on the HD decision.  An
alternate choice would be to investigate the specs on the CableCo's
provided HD set-top box.  If I recall correctly, there is a mandate
(perhaps US only?) that requires HD set-top boxes have a firewire
connection, essentially giving you an mpeg2 stream from the HD box.  At
the very least, this would give you an opportunity to experiment with
the better quality signal, without having to purchase any equipment,
save the rental costs of the box.
