Hans, This afternoon, I downloaded and compiled the 0.4.6 snapshot you reference below.
With my PVR-500, the 0.4.6 version of the "tuner" module looks like someone cut the signal strength by 75%. If I unload the 0.4.6 version of the "tuner" module and modprobe the 0.4.4 version of the "tuner" module, the picture looks fine. (I left the other modules at the 0.4.6 version.)
