In the US, redistributing these firmware images are not likely to be legal, and although I doubt that Hauppauge would have any logical reason to object, logic is something that US corporation are not really famous for. So, my installer downloads the firmware tarball at install time, and I verify md5 checksums of the downloaded file. Having the md5 checksums change throws me a minor monkey wrench. Not that I can expect firmware.tar.gz to change rather often, but still…
