Standard 3 forces mono standard only. Standard 8 forces NICAM but it 
falls back to mono if no NICAM is found. So this is expected behavior.

What is odd in both cases is that the chip does not seem to recognize 
the audio carrier when it is set to autodetect.

Can you check this card under Windows? I'm beginning to suspect that 
there may be a problem with this card. I've never seen something like 
this before.
