I know that 8.1 is coming soon. I'll upgrade to a 2.6.18 kernel if that's what it takes - no sweat! Frankly, I'll do whatever it takes to get the system 100% stable again. Suggestions?
Go grab a null-modem adaptor from Radio Shack (presuming that RS still resembles a hobby shop enough to stock something like this), run a serial cable from the serial port, through the null-modem adaptor, to another machine, read the serial-console HOWTO and the boot prompt HOWTO to redirect console messages through the serial port, and run minicom on the other machine, making sure that it's succesfully capturing the kernel boot messages, with autocapture turned on.
Then, the next time the machine locks up, see if you manage to capture an Oops, or a Bug.
