I think in Ubuntu you have a menu entry services where you can disable them.

When feisty (hope I got the name right) comes out it will have an up to 
date kernel for the rewritten driver.

The standard answer, when it's ready ;-) It is difficult to say as every 
time Hans tried to make a new release a bug was found that needed fixing 
and testing. But I get the feeling it's close now.

Be aware that it first will only be available for kernels >=2.6.18. I am 
not sure if Hans will be backporting all the changes.
