Hi Robert,
I got rid of pops by configuring my audio chip (it's a msp3400/pvr350) 
in /etc/modprobe.conf
"options msp3400 once=1 opmode=2 dolby=1 debug=0 stereo_threshold=0 
standard=3  "
try modinfo "your audio chip" and see what the options are.
