I applied the patch and now have three choices cvidix ivtv and v4l2
with cvidix the osd and lirc both work mplayer... 55%cpu on my p3-933 so
this looks like an option.
with ivtv lirc works but osd does not.
with v4l2 neither osd or lirc work.

Found this old patch MPlayer-1.0pre7try2-ivtvosd.diff on ivtv/misc
Maybe I can massage it into applying to the latest mplayer over the next
week or so.

Of course with my proficiency in C it will be like a blind person
putting together a gig saw puzzle.
