Hi Rick,
Thanks for the info.
If you are suggesting that I should use the X11 driver because the "-vo
v4l2" is not going to receive sufficient developer attention from
an IVTV and/or mplayer perspective then I will have to look into
alternatives.
A kind member of this list just sent me a patch which gives me the
ability to use "-vo cvidix" which is another alternative to explore as
well.
In answer to you question my pvr is powered by a p3-933 and I was under
the impression that this was not enough power to do high quality video
playback with "-vo xv"
Also it seems a shame not to use the hardware mpeg decoder that is
included with my pvr-350 card.
Basically I just wanted to make a little homebrew pvr with the least
amount of hardware and software that does what I want.
use case 1 "watch tv"
I have Rogers digital cable which pretty much forces me to use
the set top box provided by Rogers.
Issue "ivtvctl -K1" to select the pvr-350's pass-through mode.
Pass-through gives me very low latency so that I can use my stb
remote control with the cable companies osd without annoying lag.
Uses 2-5 percent of cpu.
use case 2 "time shifting"
Hardware mpeg encoding and decoding allows record and playback
of very high quality
recording is as simple as "dd if=/dev/video0 of=myVideo.mpg"
Takes 2 percent cpu to do this task.
A trivial shell script and cron should take care of the
scheduling.
playback is as simple as "mplayer -vo v4l2 -ao v4l2 -ac hwmpa
myVideo.mpg" and I can skip the commercials.
use case 3 "play mp3's"
I have this working... not a great solution at the moment but it
works.
with the "-vo cvidix" option I can make this work very nicely.
use case 4 "play videos of assorted formats"
I use mencoder on my powerful machine and then transfer the
video via smb to the pvr which is also a samba server.
with "-vo cvidix" this should be even easier.
Are you suggesting that "-vo v4l2" will not be well supported?
Sincerely,
