The following settings seem to work well for every different kind of
video I can have.

"fbset -xres 720 -vxres 720 -yres 480 -vyres 480"
and
[altVideo]
menu=yes
quiet=yes
vo=cvidix
ao=alsa
screenh=480
screenw=720
fs=yes
cache=4096

Interesting the E8 setting is only needed the first time I run mplayer
Seems superfluous since my input from
        Input   : 1
        Name    : S-Video 1
        Type    : 0x00000002
        Audioset: 0x00000007
        Tuner   : 0x00000000
        Standard: 0x0000000000FFFFFF ( PAL NTSC SECAM )
        Status  : 0

        Input   : 3
        Name    : S-Video 2
        Type    : 0x00000002
        Audioset: 0x00000007
        Tuner   : 0x00000000
        Standard: 0x0000000000FFFFFF ( PAL NTSC SECAM )
        Status  : 0

not the tuner, but what the heck it works.

This works!

Now just two more parts of the usage model to work out.

1. I need to add a fileselection menu to the OSD.

2. When playing mp3 audio the OSD does not work because ... (there is no
video stream!)
        I guess I need a dummy video stream or something.

Lutz many thanks so much for all your help!
