So there are other ATSC and QAM cards that work? That would have been my plan. To buy a analog cable card, then expand one at a time as needed. But I did not see any other cards that seemed to be clearly supported.

I'm using LVM now with ext3 on PATA RAID. 160Gb. Once I get everything going, I'll probably jump up on the HD size. It would be nice to have my collection on the HDD so I can watch it anytime from any of my TVs. Thats my real objective. Not sure how to get around the encryption or if I need to!? I don't plan to burn them. I wish I could copy my DVDs. I loose some sometimes to my son. I really need my fair use back...

The encryption is at the cable signal level, which causes you to not
see/decipher the cable company's shows. I have a DCT-2524 connected
to a PVR-150 via S-Video, and Serial IO to handle the channel changing
tasks. Works pretty well.

For QAM, I am using an Avermedia A180. I also have a pcHDTV RT 5 lite,
but I think the A180 is just a bit cleaner/nicer. Seems to lock quicker, and a bit better. There are several flavors of Dvico cards
that can do QAM and are well supported in linux.

For ATSC, I am using an Air2PC card, connected to a RatShack antenna
in the attic.
One problem with QAM is that the cable company has the ability to move
channels between multiplexes at will, which can, and will mess with your
channel definitions, and cause you grief with capturing shows. Using
their box (the DCT-2524) gets around that.

One nice feature of the QAM, if you can get all the channels defined
correctly is that you can capture more than one channel at a time, if they are on the same multiplex. A couple of my clear multiplexes have 11 channels on them, so I could capture up to 11 shows at one time if I had that desire.

Obviously, each card requires a PCI/PCI-X slot, so that also starts to
factor in when selecting hardware, which is why I have 2 BE machines.
My main machine has 2 cards, so I can keep it up near 100% and it can
capture whatever is needed. Then the 2nd machine has my "experimental"
cards, so I can test and play, and not knock the myth system down
when I need to bounce, etc, etc.
