That indicates to me that the audio sound server your desktop is using
may have died.  (Just a thought)

To eliminate that possibility, after the sound stops, make a capture to
a file using 

$ cat /dev/video0 > foo.mpg
^C

Then do whatever you have to do to get audio back (reboot? log out and
back in?).  Then

$ mplayer foo.mpg

and see if you can hear audio.
