It's exactly what was needed only far, far better, thank you. It's much
more functional than mplayer.

As long as the video stream from /dev/video? is continuous, toggling the
recording function with Shift-R first creates then appends the file, e.g.
$HOME/vlc-record-2009-11-20-04h23m44s-video0-.mpg

If the video stream is broken, such as stopping and starting the VHS
playback, then the next Shift-R creates a new file with the current
timestamp in the filename.
