kernel 2.6.9, device is created when the lirc_dev module loads, using udev.

I'm assuming that the device is not configured correctly (there's a
possibility that it's not receiving anything, I guess, but it's a new
remote with new batteries. I'll bring my meter home from work and
check the batteries just to make sure)
