Dear JabRef developers,

in the last weeks it is often asked, which is the minimum requirement on the
Java Runtime Environment to run the current version of JabRef. We recommend
Sun JRE version 1.5, right?

But on the home page, we wite on several places that Jaref "[...] requires
Java 1.4 or newer.", see e.g.:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/jabref/
http://jabref.sourceforge.net/faq.php

Furthermore, there is a misleading error message appearing when you try to run
JabRef 2.3 beta 2 on JRE 1.4, see:
https://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1815166&forum_id=318825

Why is it not possible to check for the JRE version number in the very
beginning of the program using System.getProperty("java.version"); and give a
correct error message when the JRE is too old.

If we keep the current behaviour of the program, maybe we loose a lot of
potential users because they do not know the reason of this problem.
