My 2 cents about this: It think we should have on the main Jabref page jabref.sf.net directly two buttons Latest Stable Version, Latest Beta Version. Audacity does a good job at this: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ I am thinking big, pretty buttons (Kind of like here http://wordpress.org/download/) in the right column.
