There are many advantages, especially on the source code level. As far
as I know, all platforms that distribute the Sun JRE at all,
distribute versions 1.5 and/or 1.6 (and JabRef doesn't seem to run on
non-Sun JREs anyway). Version 1.5 was released in 2004, so we're not
exactly demanding that users keep on the bleeding edge :)

Perhaps we should do as Christopher suggests, and add prominent
"Download stable version" and "Download beta version" links on the top
of the main page. If we do that, perhaps the "Download" link in the
top menu should be removed. Another option is to let the Download link
go to a new page where we provide further links to the stable and beta
releases. I can't see at the moment how to get a link to a specific
release, but I'm sure it's possible somehow.
