Hi Guys!

> Christopher, what do we have to do to formulate a proposal?

To apply to GSoc, we need to fill out this page:

http://code.google.com/soc/2008/org_signup.html

This is essentially a set of questions (I tried to fill some of them out
below already) and an URL to a page that describes our ideas.

For example Apache used this page last year:
http://wiki.apache.org/general/SummerOfCode2007

Or Inkscape this:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Googles_Summer_Of_Code_2007

Essentially we propose ideas to Google and they select those to offer to
students.

Questions we need to answer (I answered :

2.) What is your Organization's Homepage?

4.) Why is your organization applying to participate in GSoC 2008? What do
you hope to gain by participating?

---++ About Your Mentors

14.) What criteria did you use to select these individuals as mentors?
Please be as specific as possible.

We chose among long-standing developers with the project who fitted all
the three following criteria:

a.) the expertise with the code base
b.) have introduced new developers to the code before (or even conducted
projects with students on the code)
c.) have volunteered to be a mentor

15.) Who will your mentors be? Please enter their Google Account address
separated by commas. If your organization is accepted we will email each
mentor to invite them to take part. (optional)

---++ About The Program

16.) What is your plan for dealing with disappearing students?

Regarding the project: Work done by students will be done in a separate
branch as to minimize harm against the project.

Regarding the students: Our plan is to use weekly status updates and keep
in close contact with the student throughout the program. We are sure that
our ideas are interesting enough and that our mentors can provide enough
guidance and motivation that students will stick with us though.

17.) What is your plan for dealing with disappearing mentors?

All our mentors have agreed to be available during the course of the
project and to

Each mentor has agreed to substitute in for another mentor in case the
mentor be unavailable

18.) What steps will you take to encourage students to interact with your
project's community before, during and after the program?

19.) What will you do to ensure that your accepted students stick with the
project after GSoC concludes?

We think we have a good sense of community in the project that would make
students stick to us.
Two ideas we had for making students stick is

a.) to provide follow-up projects
b.) suggest to students that they promote JabRef at their university (this
makes them stick, since most people really love JabRef for working with
BibTex, so we are sure that will make them like to stay with us :-)

> What are possible work packages?

I would suggest starting a wiki page for collecting ideas.

> Do we have candidates that apply for this job yet?

Students? Not yet, but I could advertise a little bit here at the
university.

Cheers,
   Christopher
