I guess your issue is rather related to BibTeX than to JabRef. Although Morten 
suggested to add the string "1999 [1942]" to the "year" field this did not work 
for me either.

You need a specific citation style for sociologists or historians. Have a look 
at biblatex-philosophy 
(http://mirror.ctan.org/help/Catalogue/entries/biblatex-philosophy.html) and 
the other styles in Dominik's list at 
http://biblatex.dominik-wassenhoven.de/author-year.shtml .
