Dear Axel, dear Stefano,

thank you very much for your help! Yes, the square brackets seemed to be the problem in my case. It took me quite a while but I have now finally resolved it by using biblatex. Once again, thank you so much for your help!

Best, Barbara

    I guess your issue is rather related to BibTeX than to JabRef.
    Although Morten suggested to add the string "1999 [1942]" to the
    "year" field this did not work for me either.

    You need a specific citation style for sociologists or historians.
    Have a look at biblatex-philosophy
    (http://mirror.ctan.org/help/Catalogue/entries/biblatex-philosophy.html)
    and the other styles in Dominik's list at
    http://biblatex.dominik-wassenhoven.de/author-year.shtml .

It can be done the right way with biblatex and several of its style files. However, just inserting the longer string "1999 [1942]" (for instance), has always worked for me. Can you tell us what goes wrong in your case? If bibtex gets confused by the square brackets, try enclosing them in braces, and enter the following in the "year" field: 1999 {[}1942{]}

Cheers,

Stefano
