It can be done the right way  with biblatex and several of its style files.
However, just inserting the longer string "1999 [1942]"  (for instance),
has always worked for me. Can you tell us what goes wrong in your case? If
bibtex gets confused by the square brackets, try enclosing them in braces,
and enter the following in the "year" field: 1999 {[}1942{]}
