true...  but fixing the bib so that it did not require unicode to work 
properlly was a win regardless, so we are all good.  Thanks for the 
pointer...

Hmmm... while it was fresh in my mind I just ran biber --utf and it and 
that did not work, but the help suggested "-u  Alias for 
--bibencoding=UTF-8"
