There is no need to discuss this here, particularly since the above old note from David Turner was exactly the opposite of "addressed this point". ASF projects are forbidden to distribute LGPL libraries because we do not accept the conditions of section 6. Cliff Schmidt is working with our lawyers and the FSF to obtain a better clarification on LGPL section 5 (what constitutes linking in Java) along the same lines as described by Hibernate at <http://www.hibernate.org/196.html>. However, whoever wrote that page for Hibernate failed to understand the terms of the LGPL, since redistribution of Hibernate bundled with anything that uses Hibernate causes the entire bundled work to fall under section 6 of the LGPL. In order for Hibernate's statement to be true, we would need to have the FSF state that distribution as a separable jar file is sufficient to be considered a separate, unlinked distribution (section 4) rather than an executable (section 6). Personally, I think it would be easier to just write a better license that is specific to how the developers want their java library distributed, rather than wasting time trying to make a pig smell like a rose. In any case, Jackrabbit doesn't use LGPL libraries, so I have no idea why this came up here. ....Roy
