+1 for maintainers of the 1.x branch to add features but :
* we should also try to add these features to the 2.x branch (in order to
ease the migration later on to 2.x)
* maintainers of the 1.x branch should try to migrate to the 2.x branch at a
later date, *if* the 2.x branch provide what they need of course
What I mean is that we should work together and strive to reconcile the 2
branches some day !

I don't think this was meant to be interpreted literally. Of course, the
maintainers of the 1.x branch can add features if they like.
