I would not want to disappoint you, but I found a solution!
The board I use for testing has no ICSP connector, uses a bootloader
with RS232 interface. But I did not specify a 'pragma bootloader
long_start' in the source. After added this pragma tre hex byte on the
screen increments as expected. I have no explanation for this
behaviour, but I'm glad it works (and it is not a problem with the
device file)!
