As for the lcd libs: they are okay now in the way that they provide more functionality for the same interfaces. I'd like to add backlight control (both digital and variable) and, when this is done, also add this to the lcd_app and library. But assuming I don't have more time, it will take me another week or two (without the documentation...). The reason I tell you this, is that I am a bit reluctant to release the lcd_app (+ lib + schematics) without the backlight control, since this would force users to update their controller later on. And they might omit the backlight hardware since the support is missing.
So i'd suggest we releae without the lcd_hardware or wait until the week of april 6.
