Some drives now come with custom firmware so you can't rewrite the master boot record and maybe part of start of drive at all. Like 1.8" ZIF PATA drives for Apple iPod Classic.
One solution is simply to use a PIC to offset track 0 and not use the last fe tracks? Then the drive can be used as USB storage. Or if PIC had second IDE port that acted as device instead of host. Thoughts? Guess What? Someone bought a 80G Toshiba 1.8" ZIF for their Netbook and it's one of these Apple drives so unusable.
