I don't think a PIC can help you there, at least not one of the 8 bit family. 
There's work going on to make a PIC read and write harddisks, but we're talking 
about half a megabyte per second now, and we will surely never exceed 10 MB/s 
with an 8 bit PIC. Your notebook can read or write 166MB/s in Ultra-DMA-mode. I 
think it can be done, but just as a fun project. It's a bit like netboot over 
serial port: It may be possible but far to slow to be of any use.
