Well for the computer side... We have to do it in Java, we are allowed to use other libraries but that's about it :-)
For the microcontroller side, I was thinking about leaving the bitwise side on the microcontroller itself. And only doing addressing to the microcontroller. This leaves the option to add more modules later on. The firmata protocol looks nice when you want to change your µC in a DAQ. But I was looking more at the X10 protocol. The µC gives addresses to the buttons and leds (we're keeping the electronics side as simple as possible), which address - are addressed by - the software on the computer. I'll have some more fun with it this week, but I have some other stuff to do too (preparing fro lab sessions, class...). Currently I really hate Java for not having unsigned data types. I have to do all sorts of magic to have a good number as a result (made a class for it; can be found here: http://phalox.be/flux/viewtopic.php?id=7) Thanks for the help!
