As a JAL neophyte, I found the blink samples very useful and not noise at all.

As for JAL/JALLIB usage, I suspect that the bigger flash PICs are a siren call for C, especially when coupled with Microchip's provision of extensive C libraries and C compilers for free. It took me two years after I started playing with PICs (with a C compiler from Microchip; and a Pascal compiler from MikroElectronica) before I stumbled across JAL by way of the Jaluino board.
