Regarding synedit, Philippe Paternotte switched to scintilla for his latest
version of PMP and it works great (lot of nice features). If you are
interested in hints (useful links maybe), I guess you can contact him?

For the VCL indeed, no solution. LCL requires an entire rewrite. :(
