I agree it would be better if a click inside the visible area only adjusted the view position when it becomes a drag (and that the drag delta is applied to shift the view, rather than using absolute mouse position). New issue is here: https://issues.jalview.org/browse/JAL-2611 The click-drag view range model dovetails with Albert Vilella's excellent feature req https://issues.jalview.org/browse/JAL-232 - which is part of the Overview panel's roadmap. The 'clicked point becomes the top left' behavior is - to my mind - wrong: most bird-eye views in other systems do not behave in this way (try illustrator, gimp, photoshop, etc...) - there, the clicked position becomes the **centre**, not the top-left of the newly positioned view. I'm very much open to discussion about this - but I personally think it would be an improvement if we switched to a 'click centres view' model.
