As far as I know, there is only one version: the v2.1 thread of code.  There
is not a lot of "rampant individualism" or code forking.  I do agree that we
MUST release early and often, and NEVER go this far again without a release.
I think that for v3 we should take the same approach that Tomcat uses, and
maintain our v2 release incrementally AS NEEDED, while we work on v3.  We're
a smaller group, so we will primarily focus on the future.
