Mail servers are supposed to attempt to connect to every mail server listed
in DNS (in order, but since there is no order, that doesn't really matter).
This is so you can turn off half of your mail servers, and still receive
email. The exception you included (no route to host) is a good reason for
it to continue trying other servers.
I'm not sure if James is being smart about the kind of failure though... if
it's a socket exception, it should try the next (as with the exception
included), but then if it does connect and there's some failure (like an
invalid address), then in theory it should stop attempting. The problem is
those SendMailExceptions are not always clear what the problem was.
