That's exactly what I've done in Kaffe.

Even better, according to people who got very annoyed when we first
adopted libtool but later on got used to it and started to appreciate
its benefits :-)

The greatest advantage is that you no longer have to care whether a
library is static or dynamic: libtool and libltdl will take care of
everything for you, almost transparently.  Almost because you'll have
to specify -dlopen, but that's all.
