I had this problem, too. It seems if you use JServ you will have to use
DNS. After specifying a domain name server in resolv.conf it worked.

You should be able to get JServ to work without access to a name server
but I couldn't get it to resolve the hostname using the hosts or nsswitch.conf
files.

Perhaps you have more luck!
