huh?
How do I manage to see it, without using a proxy/cache? :-)
Anyway,
here is a dump of the page
(http://java.sun.com/features/1999/12/linux.html). It didn't come out of
my mind :-)
ABOUT THE JAVATM 2 PLATFORM FOR LINUX
December 8, 1999 -- At the Java BusinessSM
conference this
week, Sun announced the availability of the JavaTM
2 Platform,
Standard Edition (J2SE) on Linux. This milestone
satisfies a
growing desire among developers to utilize the
power of the
Java 2 platform with the popular open source Linux
operating
system. Now software developers can quickly and
easily deploy
Java technology-based applications on Linux.
Collaboration with the Linux Community
This week's announcement would not have been
possible without the collaboration of
Blackdown, a group of developers and enthusiasts
around the globe. Since its inception,
Blackdown has been a provider of Java technology
for the Linux platform. Their
dedicated effort over a number of years has laid
the foundations for this release of the
Java 2 platform port to Linux; in particular their
effort was critical to the success of this
release, and earlier omissions with respect to
this contribution are deeply regretted.
"Blackdown has made significant advancements to
the availability of Java technology for
Linux," said Gina Centoni, director of product
marketing for Sun Microsystems. "Sun
would like to thank Blackdown for its ongoing
efforts in delivering Java technology on
Linux. We look forward to continued collaboration
with Blackdown with the common
goal of providing the Java 2 platform to the Linux
community."
Collaboration with the Java Technology Community
Another key aspect of the release is the inclusion
of Inprise's Just-in-time (JIT)
compiler. "Visible through Sun's licensing the
Inprise JIT is our commitment to partnering
with the Java technology community and providing
enterprise-class solutions," said
Centoni. This release will also be included in
shipments of Jbuilder, Inprise's
award-winning integrated development environment.
Now Available! Java 2 Platform on Linux
J2SE for Linux is freely available via download
for individual use.
The associated Java Runtime Environment for Linux,
which enables users to run Java
technology-based applications, is freely
redistributable per the terms of the license.
Source code is available through Sun Community
Source Licensing (SCSL).
Blackdown.org continues to be a valuable source
for Java technology for Linux, including
JDK 1.1.x releases.
With this announcement, Linux now joins numerous
other existing operating systems that
support the Java 2 platform, including SGI Irix,
Compaq Tru64 UNIX, Tandem, IBM, HP,
Microsoft Windows, SolarisTM, BeOS, NetWare, SCO
and Sequent.
