Yes, yes, there are always reasons for everything. But the bottom line
was the consistent absence of a deliverable that was of critical
business importance to others. When one of those companies with a
critical business interest went ahead and funded their own work, the end
result was hurt feelings and a lot of silly accusations.
Yes, there was a communications screwup that greatly contributed to the
hurt feelings. Sun is occasionally kind of self-centered :-) and takes a
bit too much credit. But the damage has been done and, hopefully, is
being slowly undone.
At the end of the day, the issue - the one you raised in your original
post - is whether Blackdown continues to lead or is consigned to the
sidelines. My answer is that it's up to Blackdown, pure and simple.
Many, many people have accepted its leadership and will continue to
accept its leadership. But it'll only happen if Blackdown exerts
leadership.
I have no doubt of the quality of Blackdown's engineering work, but
there's more to leadership than engineering. Without those other
amenities - schedules, checkpoints, and deliverables (in other words,
visibility) - the engineering doesn't matter. Case in point: nobody know
1.2.2 was coming, so Inprise made other plans. The lack of visibility
not only hurts the users, it hurts the Blackdown developers who've been
sweating blood to make this port happen.
I want to see Blackdown continue to lead, as do many others. It'll
happen if and only if Blackdown decides to make it so.
