I played again with Suse6.4:

java -classic 

works (of course then without hotspot).

It seems that the VM dies after reading (or trying to read) .hotspotrc.

Creating an empty File makes no difference.
But I can't imagine what this file should contain.
Anything (for example blabla) entered there produces:

java
Unrecognized VM option 'blabla'
Could not create the Java virtual machine.
