I'd like to point out though that the only way to get the printed image to come even close to what the app is displaying (at least with applets) is to use images created or converted to 72 dpi.
 
I had this problem with some images I was rying to print. They were at 150 dpi and displayed fine in the applet, but then printed at a very much oversized scale. I was tearing my hair out on this until I converted the images to 72 dpi and everything printed fine. Too bad the print model won't accept multiple dpi settings!

The short answer is: You can't!
DPI is only applicable to printed material and printers.
The Image on screen knows nothing about how it is going to be printed, all it know is: at screen-coordinates(x, y) draw a pixel with color(color).
