as far as I know, hardware acceleration does not depend on wether your app
is running in windowed mode. Maybe this will be question in full window
mode.
You can try to get a Diamond card, but I guess they will be sold out
soon....We got some strange effects with our Elsa Erazor. Triangles got
colored in a totaly wrong way. But texture mapping was working fine. Frame
rate was as good as with Viper770. But I didn't test the Elsa card with the
NVidia driver.
The major problem is that you don't know what kind of graphics card your
end user will use. That's why it doesn't make sense to optimize your java3d
application to a particular card :-(

what about the windowed hardware acceleration, anybody knows, is it
possible with a TNT2 chip?
I cannot get a Diamond Viper770 anymore right?
You had trouble with the driver from Elsa, so would be a card from Ausus
better?
Is the Elsa Erazor III working with a driver from Nvidia?
