hi Desiree,
we've made some hardware tests under different operating systems (win95, 98, NT)
und graphics cards (3dlabs, Elsa, Diamond, ATI, no name). The viewing front end
uses either Java3D in immediate mode (openGL and directX) or Magician (openGL
Java API).
First, win NT only supports directx 3 and Java3D needs directx 6. Windows 2000 will
support directx 7.
Java3D running under directx does not support environment texture mapping.
Best results we got with our reference 3dlabs (GVX 1). Next with Diamond Viper770
ultra (TNT2 chipset) both with texture mapping and without under win NT 4 SP5 and
Java3D (openGL) or Magician.
You should try to use a graphics card with good hardware acceleration and IMHO
Nvidia chipsets and drivers have best openGL support in the consumer market
segment.
We also got serious problems when we tried not to use jdk 1.2.2 & Java3D 1.1.2, the
current final releases.
