hi,
in short: you can let run java3d applications in retained mode (most
examples are doing that). The renderer is running continously. Or you can
use immediate mode. You have to start and stop the renderer by yourself
(see example pureImmediate...)
Magician is a Java API for openGL, will say if you're familiar in opengL
you can do all that in Java. This is similar to immediate mode as you don't
have any scenegraph facilities.
If you intend to use win NT as your major platform, I would prefer openGL.
Windows 2000 also provides directx 7 support. The problem is, how good is
the driver support of current graphics cards for win 2000 ? and how many
users do have win 2000 ?
3dlabs is a manufactor of professional graphic chipsets (GLINT, also used
on Elsa cards) for high end cards. It also offers graphics cards like the
GVX 1 (about $1000)
Diamond is the manufactor of Viper770. Chipset (TNT2) is by NVidia. All
manfactors of graphics cards with TNT2 chipset are using the generic
display drivers from NVidia and only add some new features. That is, you
also can use the NVidia driver if you get trouble with your specific
driver.
Diamond now is a subdivision of S3 and don't uses NVidia chipsets anymore.
But most other manufactors do it like ASUS, Elsa.....
our application crashes under certain circumstances when we use j3d 1.1.3.
Maybe this is because of immediate mode ?
Sure, you can switch to the newest (beta - ) releases. But then you maybe
will get some instabilities. Some people here reported under jdk 1.3 you
have to let run your application in classic mode (no hotspot). Just make
some tests.
About prices: current cards with GForce sterting at DM 500. 3dlabs can be
found only in the professional (CAD) segment. prices starting at DM 600
All cards using the same chipset do have the same capabilities if their
drivers aren't buggy... That means if you take any TNT2 or GForce graphics
card you should have the same hardware acceleration. But GForce has
superior qualities because of T & L (transformation- and lighting
calculations) .
And if you got any trouble concerning TNT / GForce display drivers (as we
got with Elsa Erazor III :-(( ) try to use the origial drivers from NVidia.

Hi, sorry I still do have some questions concerning this mail ...

Ok, what does immediate mode really means, I never got that?
And what is Magician?

2000 will

Is NT ok with OpenGL?

3dlabs (GVX 1): what kind of chip?
how much and where can I get it?
Is 3dlabs the manufacturer of the graficcard or the chip?
what das GVX 1 means?
Diamond Viper 770: Am I right with
manufacturer Diamond?
graficcard is Diamond Viper 770 ultra
chip is TNT2
where can I find it and how much is it?
in the price list I have got I didnt found a Diamond with TNT2 chip
and I did not see 3dlabs at all
and do they have both the possibility to do windowed hardware
acceleration?
. Next with Diamond Viper770

What about Java3D 1.1.3?
And it is not a good idea to change to Java3D 1.2beta yet?
I would really appreciate your help, Gernot or others, thanks sofar,
