Using the new beta version of DirectX, it will try to
switch from 256 color mode to full screen 16bit color mode
and display a warning message. If not successfully the
application should quit without crash.
What graphics card /OS are you using ?
When it crash, do you notice any error information and which
DLL library cause the crash ?
You can obtain more information by using the property:
java -Dj3d.debug=true
