I run an ATI 3D RAGE PRO (8mb) AGP using the OpenGL driver quite easily
(though there is an updated driver that is a must). Frame rate is
pretty decent too with texturing, lighting, behaviors, etc (currently
running a solar system simulator). And yes, windowed mode. At home, I
run a Voodoo3 2000, again windowed mode but using the DirectX driver.
Had problems with it (textures must be 256x256 or less), and wireframe
polygon mode seems hosed, otherwise the frame rate is much better.
So out of the two cards I've tried, I've done pretty decent, though the
cheaper ATI card was _definitely_ more solid, but again not as fast. As
for the bit mode color, change to 16bit. Seems like h/w acceleration
drivers like 16bit.
As for betting on J3D h/w acceleration... good bet I think, since it's
based on the two big APIs out there and h/w vendors support them. The
other bet you should be concerned about is Sun's commitment to J3D,
though judging how they respond to this email list, again I think is a
good bet.

Subject: [JAVA3D] Hardware acceleration
I'm working on a proof of concept for a video game I'm writing, and I'd
like
to be sure that Java3D can do the job. My difficulty is in getting a
system
set up that does hardware acceleration, so I can see what performance is
like on such a system.
I've read in one of the faqs on j3d.org that most PC video cards
(including
all Voodoo based cards) don't support OpenGL acceleration in windowed
mode.
I'm assuming the same is true of my RagePro, since my demo runs like a
wounded dog on it. The DirectX beta version of Java3D gives me a
garbled
error message telling me to "change to bit mode color" (the number of
bits
is an empty space). None of the video card settings I've tried
eliminate
this message.
Has anyone gotten DirectX Java3D running on a RagePro? On any video
card?
I've tried three so far, and all fail in similar ways. Is there a video
card which I can use on a PC that supports OpenGL in windowed mode?
And, I guess more importantly, how soon does the Java3D development team
expect Java3D for DirectX to be consistently usable? I'm betting my
livelihood on the idea that in a year or two, hardware acceleration for
Java3D will be supported on most video cards. Is it a fool's bet?
Thanks in advance,
Bobby
